OLIVES

The cultivation area of the olive tree is not very extensive because the production of olive oil was traditionally destined for the family consuption and as gifts for friends. We believe that one of the reasons for its quality lies precisely in the family nature and not commercial production.

A real secret, jealously preserved and passed on through generations, is the skill of blending the three varieties traditionally grown in western Sicily: Nocellara del Belice, Biancollila and Cerasuola.

The olive trees are grown organically on the highest part of the former Feudo della Duchessa in the municipality of Contessa Entellina and in Contrada Genovese in the municipality of Menfi. These are structurally different soils and over time identified as particularly suitable for the cultivation of the olive tree. The climate of both territories, characterized by long sunny days alternating with cool nights to temper the extremes of the warmer months, is particularly favorable to the cultivation of both vines and olives.

VINES

The Spanò family, Baroni di San Giuliano, has a long winemaking tradition, archival documents attest to the cultivation of wine grapes in the fiefs of the Family since 1624. In the first half of the nineteenth century the Marquis Nicola Spanò and Caracciolo founded a a vinification plant that for the excellence of its wines obtained patents from the Holy See and from various Royal Houses.

Today the family's attention is concentrated in three properties located in three wine-growing areas among the most suitable in Sicily: the Feudi di Mazzaporro and della Duchessa in the DOC area of Contessa Entellina, about 300 meters above sea level, the Contrada Genovese, in the DOC Menfi area, and the sunny and airy plain of the Feudo di Triglia-Scaletta, along the coast of the DOC area of Marsala. Three territories that represent the new frontier and the ancient tradition of Sicilian viticulture and enology.

The company's efforts are concentrated in the production of Sicilian native grapes, Grillo and Nero d'Avola in particular, but already in the 1960s many international varieties were introduced. The cultivation, respecting the family philosophy, takes place in an organic regime and the grapes are transferred to two Cooperative Cellars in the area known for the quality of their wines.

WHEAT

We let the lands removed from the vines rest for five to eight years before proceeding with a new plant, so every year we have several hectares of land available for the cultivation of durum wheat in a rigorous organic regime.

It is our pride to support the tradition by exclusively cultivating ancient Sicilian grains such as Timilia, also called Tumminia, Simeto and Russello.
